In this instance, the beach itself is the attraction and the reason people make this 30-mile drive on Route # 3 east from the capital of San Juan. But while you are in the area, (just a few miles before you reach the beach) do visit El Yunque, officially known as the Caribbean National Forest, a forest reserve (and bird sanctuary) designated by Teddy Roosevelt himself. In fact, this 28,000 acre sanctuary is the only tropical forest in the US national system.
ACCESS TO BEACH:
It costs $1 to park your vehicle and another 25 cents for locker, shower facilities and change area. The long, shady beach is government-controlled and closes at 5 PM every day. (Take note: the beach is always closed on Mondays!)
Weekends can be very crowded. As for food, you can get snacks such as sandwiches and coconut milk from vendors near the entranceways.
QUALITY OF BEACH:
Perhaps the most famous beach of Puerto Rico. This is a long crescent-shaped white sand retreat with a natural crystal-clear lagoon protected by barrier reefs which makes for perfect swimming conditions. In fact, the beach conditions don't get much better than this.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
The area was once a bustling coconut plantation and still today retains its lush, tropical setting of verdant forest and perfect, protected beach.
